Tension provokes suspense.

Where I played as a child was surrounded by a lot of barb wire. Even when it was rusted, fallen, and useless it still seemed formidable and powerful. It's strange how something that is so easy to simply move around has strong enough presence to evoke such powerful feelings, and memories.
